We went out last night to celebrate my Mum and Dada’s 25th Wedding Anniversary. Mum asked me to suggest a place for dinner and I blurted out Balay Cena Una without hesitation because 1) I haven’t been to the place and 2) I need to cross that out from the “Restaurants to Try” part of my planner.
We were all surprised we had the place to ourselves. Dada was kidding that he actually reserved the place for this momentous occasion! Lol. (I forgot to take a picture of the door with the very welcoming “Abierto” sign!) While waiting for our orders, we took photos!
And my favorite part of the night, food! I wanted to try something new so I didn’t ask for their bestseller. We didn’t order appetizers anymore since we were all feeling hungry and all.
Since I have this thing for salads, I ordered one Caesar’s Salad. I was able to take two to three lettuce leaves but I tasted something that only meant one thing: I shouldn’t go on. I ended up giving the platter to Mum and Dada since it had dried fish (and I am allergic to it.) Good thing I wasn’t able to swallow it or else I might have spoiled the night away. The dressing was good, though!
I had Beef Pepper Steak for my main meal and I was really impressed. The mushrooms were very tender and it was really tasty, too!
My sister ordered Buffalo Wings and she wanted me to try it out so I did. Her dish was tasty too, but I liked mine better (not that I’m saying it’s not good, but I just prefer the one I ordered). Mum had Fish Fillet and it was Shrimp Al Ajillo (Gambas) for Dada (no photos for these two).
After a few minutes of finishing our main meals, we flipped the pages of the menu again to decide what desserts to feast upon next! It was a unanimous decision to order different desserts so we could try it all out.
Mine – English Vanilla Cheesecake with Blueberry Sauce
My Sister’s – Opera Cake
Mum’s – Mango Chilled Cheesecake
Dada’s – Fruit Tartlets with Sorbet in the Side
Aside from the food, what made me fall in love immediately with the place is the ambiance. My eyes kept on looking around and while waiting for the desserts, I roamed around to take a few photos. I didn’t go up the stairs anymore so these are just a few photos of what’s in the first floor.
And what’s a family dinner without family photos right? While Mum was away, Ting and I had our photos taken with Dada (since we seldom get to be with him since he works in Manila.)
And then we each had our share of an “only child” moment. I think my sister really enjoyed it. Haha. Look at my version. That is me being me and them being them. Isn’t it pretty obvious who’s the most joyful of them all? Lol.
This is my fave photo of the night!
Here’s a panoramic view of the ground floor of Balay Cena Una.
I went home feeling so blessed not only with the kind of food I ate last night, and the massage we had at Nuat Thai, but because my Mum and Dada reached 25 years of marriage, with us being intact and still being a family.
In other news though, where will I eat next? As the common Pinoy teleserye would suggest at the end, “Abangan!“
