The Untold Story of the Ws and H of my Blogging History

January 21, 2016

I’ve been blogging for almost 10 years now and I feel so old just thinking about it. In the past blogs I’ve made (yes, blogs, with an s because I’ve been platform hopping since 2007), I never really talked about how I started, who inspired me, but most of the time, I’ve mentioned in a blog series or two the reason WHY I blog. I’ve been really clear about this ever since that I blog to express myself and not to impress, something I learned in campus journalism back when I was in grade school.

I wanted to put this in my About Me  section but I realized it would be one chatty and boring page if I did. So I’m dedicating a post solely for the purpose of sharing it to you!

WHEN did I start blogging?

It was in 2006. I was in 2nd year high school and making a blog was a trend. My friends and I each had a blog of our own where we poured our hearts out. I

WHAT platforms have I been in?

My first blog was in Blogger (2006), then I shifted to WordPress in 2007. Multiply became a boom and I kinda used that in between (or together with those two). I also created a Livejournal account but never really got serious with it. My WordPress went on for a few years and then I went back to Blogger in early 2009. I then shifted to Tumblr in the later part of 2009 because my sister “lured” me into it (back when they still had Tumblarity and reblogging was still so cool LOL). I still have my first Tumblr blog and the second one I created (but I already purged that account from a lot of posts). The latter is what I consider my personal/prose blog. Then on December of 2011, I went back to Blogger again (thus, superaena was born). And I went back to WordPress just last year (2015).

Confusing, isn’t it? I’ve been a platform butterfly ever since. But that’s really what happened!

WHERE are all my old blogs?

I won’t be posting all the URLS of my past blogs because I myself cringe just backreading through a few of my posts  (HAHA I need to contain myself from embarrassment) and I also deleted the very old ones, except for the one in Blogger that I kept but in private and my two Tumblr accounts.

WHO inspired me to blog?

This one’s very easy to answer: Lia Cruz. It was her (now defunct) Livejournal account that really inspired me to blog (I really wanted to put here why I stumbled upon her blog but out of respect, I’ll just leave it for you to figure out if you know who she was with back in 2006 😉 ). I loved how raw all her blog posts were and I felt that in a way, I knew her. She was oblivious to the fact of the existence of a highschool sophomore girl reading through her blog, she didn’t even know how much she inspired me. But ever since then, before she became a TV personality, I was already a fan. Well, still is now!

A lot of bloggers did follow, you know. But never the kind of inspiration and influence Lia’s blog gave me.

HOW I started blogging?

I mostly just posted a lot of personal stuff. Back then, having a blog was having an online diary. I just wrote what happened to me on that certain day, a one liner or two of what I was feeling, a poem I had in mind, the lyrics of a song, a movie quote – it was all so simple. I just wanted people to know what I was doing with my life. It felt nice sharing it with other people. But then I realized I could actually do something better than blabbering about my personal life.

I kind of miss it sometimes. While writing this post, I found myself searching the web for my old accounts and the links they had with them. I backread through a few of my friends’ blogs and laughed a little. Oh, to be so young and juvenile. Although I miss that kind of approach, I deem it is inappropriate for someone my age to be posting boring, adult things I do in my everyday life. Plus the internet is not so safe with these things anymore (what with Twitter and Facebook always spewing something viral).

WHY am I still blogging?

I can never leave my first love (writing). No matter how many times I’ve abandoned a blog, been on an unannounced hiatus, I keep coming back to it. I write because I have something to say not because I want to say something. I write because I want to continue to inspire people.  I don’t want to write just for the sake of keeping a blog alive. This is the reason why I don’t really push myself to post something when I’m not in the mood. I tried it once and I felt I wasn’t even the person who wrote that blog post.

Well, that’s the WHEN, WHERE, WHAT, WHY, and HOW of my blogging “career” (if I even have something that can be called that LOL). My where is obviously in a laptop, at home, school, or office.

I wanted to add what I learned in blogging all through those years but I think it would be better to save that for another blog post so I can elaborate more.

How about you? What are the Ws and H of your blogging history? 🙂

I remember the time when blogs were simply online diaries. And I’m not sure I’m happy that time is over. While the quality of content has improved over the years, a lot of blogs now are getting less and less personal. T.T

LIA CRUZ. Yes. The life peg of my high school years! She got featured a lot on Candy Magazine. Which was what I obsessed on for most of my early teenage life. (Candy Magazine, not Lia being on it. Lol.)

I may actually attribute my WHO and WHY to Candy because it paved the way for my love for magazines and features writing. While I may have already given up my dreams of working for a glossy full-time (been there, done that, not doing that again), the blog is the sole remaining manifestation of my undying dream to create something fun but worth reading.

“While the quality of content has improved over the years, a lot of blogs now are getting less and less personal.” IKR??? Some blogs are just generated for the sake of income/fame.

OMG! Glad that you know her! Let’s both not give up on that undying dream, yes? 🙂

This just makes me fell more of an amateur in blogging knowing the fact that I just started last Nov 2015. I do have a long way to go, but as they say “a journey to a thousand miles, begins in a single step.”

    • Reply Rej Relova January 22, 2016 at 1:23 pm

That’s right! 🙂 Take your time.

  • Reply Jeini January 22, 2016 at 2:03 pm

Hahaha. I can answer that soon in one of my posts. Well you still have to thank me of my undeniably good “luring” you to Tumblr, you found you #BestTeammate. And thank you for reminding me how juvenile I was with my previous Blogger. More powers and keep to inspire others. Love you. 🙂

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:01 pm

Yes. Haha. Thank you! Ikaw ang dahilan bakit nagTumblr ako. LOL.

Blogging is for keepsake. Me too, I’ve been blogging for like ages now. I used to blog on Blogspot, Xanga, Multiply, Livejournal, WordPress, and yes, my current blogging platform, Tumblr. Blogging is indeed a part of me (even though I sometimes neglected my blog or rarely update). But it was and is still is fun (and embarrassing esp when you’re backreading your old blogposts) haha! Oh well, those times. 🙂

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:03 pm

HAHAHA! Omg. I just backread through my Tumblr blog this morning and I can’t help but laugh at my younger “blogger” self. I was so unstripped!

  • Reply Richel V. January 23, 2016 at 7:38 pm

Nice read! I’ve been (unofficially) blogging since ’11/’12 in Tumblr but I have this thing of reading over my things and deleting them if I’m embarrassed of them at the current time, so I have no records of what I have wrote before. Hahaha.

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:05 pm

I actually did that when I moved to WordPress! Haha. Some old posts were deleted because they were just too personal.

  • Reply Yshy January 24, 2016 at 11:35 pm

I so can relate!! Probably been into all those platforms every commenter has mentioned and well, after 11 years I’m still here! Haha! My original blogger favorites naman is Patty Laurel and Bianca Gonzalez!! Hahaha

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:06 pm

I also read Bianca Gonzalez’ blog before! But Lia’s was my favorite talaga.

  • Reply Janine January 26, 2016 at 1:56 pm

I had been platform blogging since 2011 before I settled to WordPress too! Lol. I started blogging because I had a girl crush who had a blog and I wanted to be like her. But wow, I didn’t know who Lia Cruz was! Haha.

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:07 pm

She’s not really famous kasi with all people. So I totally understand that you don’t. Haha.

  • Reply Grace January 27, 2016 at 10:03 am

I’ve been blogging since 2002 pero I took a long hiatus during college. Before, sa notepad lang ang gamit namin then we’ll upload it on FTP. Our host back then was Yahoo! Geocities or Bravenet. There’s Cutenews, Fan Update, Chryp, Xanga that we used for blogging that you may have not heart about because baby ka pa non! hahaha (omg! I’m so old) and then WordPress came boom! I missed those times.

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:08 pm

Wow 2002!!! Yung Xanga lang ‘yung alam ko but never really signed up for it. But I did try to visit Geocities before!

  • Reply Mei January 27, 2016 at 11:56 am

Wow, you’ve been blogging for so long na din! I also have blogpost that somehow shared about my “history” Haha

I’ve tried a lot of platforms too, but WordPress is my favorite 🙂

I blog for keepsakes, I wanted to have something where I can look back what happened to me on this and that day. Haha and blogging is a stress-reliever for me too. 🙂

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:09 pm

Hear! WordPress is my favorite, too!

  • Reply Mimi Gonzales January 28, 2016 at 11:38 am

Blogging has definitely evolved now, that’s for sure. And I agree that I miss those personal styles of writing. I’m leaning more towards personal blogs these days because I feel like I am able to know the person more through their personal posts. 🙂 I can’t believe I’ve been blogging for so many years already, and I just settled into my (hopefully) permanent online abode last year. Anyway, more power to your very amazing blog! 🙂

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:10 pm

Exactly. My move to WordPress actually made me feel so much at home. More power to your blog too, Mimi!

  • Reply Salvé Dalmacio January 31, 2016 at 4:13 pm

Ah, the days! I was in the fifth grade when I started to create my own blog. I still visit my very first site but I end up cringing over my old posts. Hahaha! But it’s so nice to look back! I think two of the best things back then were link exchanges and the tagboard stuff! 🙂

    • Reply Rej Relova February 25, 2016 at 6:13 pm

I actually deleted the old blogs I had. They were so jeje for my taste. Haha. And oh, superaena actually experienced still having a tagboard! LOL.

  • Reply Kai March 6, 2016 at 10:46 pm

I’ve been also platform shifting too–I started at Tumblr then moved to WordPress then in few months went back to Blogger then Tumblr for two months then moved here to Blogger again, not to mention Squarespace. Haha. 😀

    • Reply Rej Relova March 7, 2016 at 5:02 pm

Was Squarespace good? It looks so complicated to me.

  • Reply ROBERT LEE September 20, 2016 at 11:15 pm

People write (blog) for different reasons. I think your why is commendable. Often, people simply want to tell, rather than influencing. In this case, when I say intentional, there is the intent to influence people positively, and I do not mean influencing people on products/services.

Keep it up. You have been doing this long enough so keep doing. Keep blogging.

  • Reply Nilyn September 21, 2016 at 7:40 am

The same reason why I blog! I want to share my thoughts and anything I want to say. My blog is my personal diary. I blogged since 2008 but it was not until 2014 that I introduced my blog to others.

  • Reply Jessica September 21, 2016 at 8:38 am

You have been blogging so long. Bet you witnessed the big shift through out the years. The basics in journalism are helpful in blog posts and even in introducing the blogger. hehe. Keep writing and always keep the words, express and truth.

  • Reply Ann Balisbis September 21, 2016 at 10:55 am

We almost have the same Ws and H of our blogging hobby. For me, the people who inspired me to start a blog are you guys, the bloggers already in the internet. I love reading and writing and I can’t think of a better medium to pour those two all out but BLOGGING. Pero bago lang ako, I just started last year so waaaay to go. hehe I also started with just personal writings that I never published publicly because I realize that I should write MORE for the sake of helping others and not SOLELY for my own extension of thoughts, though I don’t want to remove that completely because this is still my “online diary” but as you have said, it’s no longer safe to share personal thoughts or experiences just like that in this world full of opinionated and judgmental lurkers. Just like you and other bloggers, I also love writing. I think that is really my circle. So, I hope I can keep writing through the coming years. 🙂

Back in 2007, i had my first blog.. I really doesn’t want to remember this coz back then its so awful. Its my online diary where i posts my daily thoughts and my first year as a mom. Then i left it just like that due to some serious priorities. After ages i wanna go back to writing because just like you, it is where i really do express my happiness and everything i feel like sharing, not to brag or something. And also as a way to preserve our memories as a family. I dont know if anyone here knows about Xanga but that’s where i write in 2007.. Then i lost the access and doesnt know what happened to that page so i moved to blogger in 2011 up until now.. Your post made me want to check out my old pages.. Hahaha!

Thanks for sharing your story. I guess everyone who blogs today experienced creating accounts on those platforms too before. Tumbler, Blogger, WordPress, Multiply… I even had Tabulas before. But now, since I want to turn this blogging thing seriously and professionally, I get to really push myself doing this thing. To help educate soon-to-weds about choosing wedding suppliers, and making it easier for them to plan their wedding.

Very unique way to put an “About Me” post which is quite different from the usual ones. Your story is quite interesting and it was really nice to know your blogging journey. Moving between so many platforms must have been quite frantic but glad you settled down on one 🙂 Will follow your stories for sure

I used to blog in Multiply when I was in college. I wanted to share the happenings in my life but I didn’t want to impose it on anyone so I created an online diary. I picked it up again on WordPress when my firstborn was born. It’s now a parenting and lifestyle blog. I do miss the personal posts as I don’t get to do that often anymore.
